Calacus Hit & Miss - Diego Méntrida & Eddie McGuire

Every Monday we look at the best and worst communicators in the sports world from the previous week.

HIT - DIEGO MENTRIDA

Sport is supposed to excite and inspire but in these days of elite competition, winning at all costs has often overtaken sportsmanship.

Step forward, or rather, step back, triathlete Diego Méntrida, who showed that sporting values are still alive.

Trailing British athlete James Teagle at the final stretch of the 2020 Santander Triathlon in Barcelona, Méntrida looked to have been gifted third place when Teagle took a wrong turn and ran the wrong way with the finish line in sight.

Méntrida then noticed Teagle's mistake and waited at the finish line for Teagle to take the third place that had been his for so long during the race.

“This is something my parents and my club taught me since I was a child. In my view it should be a normal thing to do”, said Méntrida. “He deserved it.”

Méntrida was awarded honorary third place and given the same prize money as Teagle in recognition of his fair play.

MISS - EDDIE MCGUIRE

While the majority of Australian Football League (AFL) players and officials remain effectively under lockdown in a bid to complete the season without any further postponements, the President of one of the clubs has come under fire for visiting a nightclub.

Collingwood's Eddie McGuire has since claimed that his visit to the Pink Flamingo nightclub was official business, but that view wasn't shared by all, with Hawthorn President Jeff Kennett saying it was "a hell of a contradiction" to what was being enforced on the players.

While McGuire didn't break any biosecurity rules, it is embarrassing for a man that has repeatedly called for hefty fines to be handed out to players who breach Covid-19 protocols, as well as being critical of players from other clubs that have been caught breaking the rules.

For any spokesperson, being consistent in your messaging and your actions is vital to ensure that you are not seen to undermine your own reputation by hypocritical actions.
